Honest reviews from our family β what we loved, what to know, and whether we'd go back.
This is our #1 campground so far β and it absolutely earns that title. One of the most beautiful places we've ever camped, with a stunning lake, incredible wildflowers, tons of recreation, and the highest elevation we've experienced. Fair warning: you do have to drive a dirt road to get there, but don't let that scare you β it's hard-packed, clear of overhead trees, double-width for larger rigs, and very manageable. Just be prepared for a steep climb! It's first come, first served, which is a gamble, so check the park rules board when you arrive (we included a photo of it!). The dark skies at night are absolutely jaw-dropping. Come prepared for altitude and you will not be disappointed.
Bama Bison is a one-of-a-kind stop with so much to see and explore. The campsites have great hookups, plenty of space, and the property offers endless opportunities to roam, hike, and enjoy nature. One of our favorite parts was interacting with the animals. You can pet the pigs, purchase fresh eggs, and take a side-by-side tour to see the bison up closeβan experience that's well worth it. Kids will love the freedom to explore, and fishing in the pond is welcome, making it a perfect family destination.
An amazing free boondocking spot right on the water with no hookups and unbeatable views of the reservoir and surrounding peaks. First-come, first-served and open seasonally β find it on the iOverlander app. A fantastic base for visiting Grand Teton National Park and the Jackson area.
A drive-in theater as a Harvest Hosts stop? Yes please! This was one of the most fun and nostalgic nights of our entire trip. There is something magical about watching a movie under the stars from your own rig at a classic American drive-in. A totally unique experience that the whole family loved. If you have kids (or just love movies), this one is an absolute no-brainer.
Diamond Cattle Company is a beautiful, peaceful stop that's just minutes off the highway while still feeling like you're out in the country. Be sure to follow the campground's recommended route when arriving, as it's the easiest and safest way to access the property. The views are stunning, and there's plenty to explore. We especially enjoyed the beautiful horse stables and the historic buildings that have been carefully relocated to the property, giving it so much character and charm.
A wonderful family farm experience in Minnesota that embodied everything great about the Harvest Hosts program. The adorable on-site store was a highlight β we stocked up on local meats, eggs, and farm products. Our son had a blast playing with the kittens while we shopped. Beautiful countryside with genuine hospitality and that peaceful farm setting that just slows everything down. Exactly the kind of authentic heartland experience that makes this lifestyle special.
Five nights at a ranch and bee farm in Lithia, FL β this one was extra special. When a Harvest Hosts stay turns into a 5-night extended stop, that's the highest compliment you can give. The property is beautiful with a sweet little gazebo, fire pit, and cows as your morning neighbors. Wake up, buy some delicious local honey, and feel completely at peace. We trick-or-treated in the nearby Fishhawk community where hundreds of homes went completely over the top with Halloween decor β an absolute trick-or-treat paradise. Then capped it off with amazing GF pizza at Fishhawk Pizza. One of those slow-down-and-breathe stays this lifestyle is all about.
No one will disagree β Camp Margaritaville Auburndale is by far one of the most fun family campgrounds anywhere in the country. Full stop. π΄ The tropical setting is absolutely pristine, but it's the ENERGY of this place that sets it apart. Camp counselors keep the kids entertained all day (and night!), renting a golf cart or scooter makes cruising the resort a total blast, and the activities list is almost too long to believe: two separate pools, a water slide, included Parrot Island mini golf on a beautifully landscaped course, fire pits, gaga ball, weekend parties and events in the kids club, cotton candy machines... it just never stops.
Big Rig Friendly? Absolutely! Mt. Desert Narrows was one of the easiest campgrounds we've navigated during our New England trip. The roads were wide enough for our 40-foot fifth wheel, sites were easy to access, and getting in and out of the campground was stress-free. If you're traveling with a large RV, this is one campground you can confidently add to your list.
Onsite boondocking at Tri-City BMX (520 Burdeck St, Schenectady/Rotterdam NY). Camping must be approved by the track operator at their discretion and is NOT guaranteed β ask ahead. If you're staying but not participating in paid activities (racing/practice) or volunteering your time, a donation is recommended to help support this volunteer-run track. WARNING: Make sure you are using an RV app as there is a 12' bridge very near the entrance to the track.
By far one of the most kid-friendly campgrounds! Family oriented with beautiful large sites with tons of trees. Summer was amazing β one of our favorites in the country.
Onsite boondocking at Catamount BMX (Willow Park) β permission only. Park your rig right next to Vermont's only BMX track. This is a volunteer-run community track, so please give back: leave a donation if you're not paying to race or practice and can't volunteer your time to help maintain it.
This resort is amazing β great place to stay. It offers many amenities, swimming (pool and lake), and a restaurant on site. We've stayed here several times over the last couple of years. Back-in asphalt sites with plenty of space for a 5th wheel and truck without disconnecting. 50/30amp, sewer, and water hookups. Spacious lots with some shade, clean restrooms and showers, and fast WiFi (~334 Mbps download).
A beautiful, peaceful stay in the White Mountains. We paid $55/night for a 30 amp full hookup site. The sites are extremely private and the facilities are exceptionally clean, plus there's a beautiful pool and river access. Centrally located to all the best of the Twin Mountains area β the perfect basecamp for exploring the gorge, the cog railway, Mt. Washington, and the downhill MTB parks. We'd absolutely come back.
A great farm stop in southern Indiana β beautiful property and a relaxing overnight. Harvest Hosts continues to deliver these hidden gem experiences that you'd simply never find any other way. A peaceful end to a travel day in a genuinely pretty part of Indiana.
A massive Thousand Trails resort just outside Orlando β perfect base camp for hitting all the theme parks. Big concrete pads, tons of amenities including mini golf, pickleball, pool, playground, fitness center, and a rec center with events. The park is huge and well-organized. Close enough to Universal and Epic Universe to make it a daily trip without breaking the bank on hotels.
A genuinely welcoming stop through Kentucky β a peaceful overnight with a community that made us feel right at home. One of the more unique Harvest Hosts listings we've encountered, and a great reminder of the warmth and generosity you find all along this lifestyle. A solid, convenient stop in western Kentucky.
A craft brewery Harvest Hosts stop right in Sebring β great vibes, good drinks, and a fun atmosphere. Even as a non-drinker I found plenty to enjoy about the setting and the energy. The racing heritage of Sebring adds a cool backdrop to the whole experience. A fun stop for anyone passing through central Florida.
Great views in Bar Nunn with elk visiting the site β it was great! Right off the highway and appears empty but has a lot of one-night stopovers. Watch your front bumper on the rocks. Kid friendly but the indoor pool is very humid.
With a name like Scenic, SD, you already know the views are going to deliver β and they absolutely did. A great overnight stop in the Badlands region of South Dakota. The landscape out here is unlike anything else in the country and waking up to it from your rig is something else. A solid Harvest Hosts stop in a breathtaking part of the country.
A family winery in Brooksville, FL β a lovely and unexpected gem tucked into central Florida. Beautiful vineyard setting and a great atmosphere for an overnight stay. Even without the wine, the grounds alone make it worth a stop. A great Harvest Hosts find for anyone in the Tampa/Ocala corridor.
A quiet ranch overnight in central Florida β sometimes you just need a peaceful spot to rest and reset, and Loghry Ranch delivered exactly that. Great Harvest Hosts stop in a part of Florida that most people drive right past without realizing how beautiful the ranching country is.
We rolled into Hot Springs dodging a snowstorm chasing us up from northern Louisiana β sirens going off in the distance were a little unnerving, but honestly? Best decision we made. The KOA itself has some really nice premium sites with full patios and grilles right next to the playroom and a kitchen that was mid-renovation (coming in hot for next season!). The loop directions are a bit confusing and there's a wild climb-and-drop right through the middle of the campground β it keeps things interesting. Hot showers were excellent, and in early December we practically had the whole place to ourselves. ποΈ Hot Springs itself is absolutely worth the detour. We walked Bathhouse Row top to bottom β the history inside is wild, especially the old gymnasium and the stunning stained glass ceiling in the Fordyce. We filled our jars straight from the hot springs to make hot cocoa downtown under the Christmas lights, which was an all-timer family memory. The science museum (Mid-America!) had the kids losing their minds over the massive kinetic machines and the dino park next door? Yeah, we fought a T-Rex. We won.
Hands down the best clubhouse of ANY Thousand Trails we've visited β and we've been to a few. We're talking pool table, piano, large screen TV, sofas, tons of games, massive seating, and a gorgeous deck overlooking the water. Easily fits 50 rowdy teenagers AND a quiet couple reading in the corner. It's that big. The sites themselves are beautiful β wooded, spacious, with gorgeous fall color when we visited in November. We had originally wanted a site near the playground, but the one we landed on turned out to be perfect. And then the fog rolled in. π«οΈ
What a refreshing surprise for an overnight stop right off the interstate! We would absolutely come back β there's tons of room to walk around, games and a full kitchen in the clubhouse, a playground for the kids, and donkeys and farm animals to pet (the donkey nose closeup says it all). The pull-throughs are wide and easy to level yourself, which makes a quick stop genuinely stress-free. With cooler weather I would have loved to stay longer and have a campfire by the pond. Highly recommend this one as a stopover that actually feels like a destination.
Just passing through? This is your spot! We landed an overflow site with power and water β not glamorous, but totally functional and exactly what we needed. The pool is gorgeous (hello, spring blooms!), the flowers were bursting everywhere, and the staff was so friendly they had hot coffee waiting for us in the morning. Yes, actual hot coffee. That alone earns major points. It's about a 20-minute drive into downtown Savannah, where we grabbed sweet treats at Leopold's, hopped on a horse and carriage ride, and soaked up all the Southern charm. Perfect overnight stop β we slept great, explored a little, and hit the road refreshed. Stay tuned for our full Savannah things-to-do blog post coming soon!
Bear Tracks is a newer park with some serious potential β and it's already delivering the goods! The pool is small but gorgeous, the shower and laundry room are spotless (quality over quantity here!), and the sites are wide open with easy, stress-free pull-ins. Even first-time RV parkers will feel like pros. Fair warning: some sites are still dirt, which could get muddy after a good rain, and the exit is a tight squeeze after dark β go slow and you'll be fine. This place is clearly still growing, and we can't wait to see what it becomes. Keep an eye on this one!
Trumbull BMX is located in Indian Ledge Park in Trumbull, Connecticut. The track hosts BMX racing and practice sessions throughout the season. Onsite camping is available for New England National members only, making it a convenient option if you race in the New England National series and want to stay right at the track.
Very dusty, but an unbeatable location for visiting the West Entrance of Yellowstone National Park. The non-power sites are first-come, first-served and the primitive sites run just $6/night. It's a longer drive to get settled in, but the proximity to Hebgen Lake and the park gate makes it worth it for an adventuring family.
Boondocking at the Wakefield Elks Lodge #1276 β no hookups (dry camping), but a fantastic location just outside Boston in a very nice suburban area. Book it through their Facebook page or find it in the RVLife app. We could walk downtown to a great dinner at the Public House, grab ice cream at Meltharbs, and on Sundays race Billerica BMX in the morning and Wakefield BMX in the afternoon. The perfect combo of city walkability and a BMX race weekend.
A great home base in central Pennsylvania's Bald Eagle Valley β close to Woodward's legendary action sports camp, Penn's Cave, and the Seven Mountains region. We loved pairing the cave tour with cheese tastings, local breweries, and hikes through Poe Paddy State Park. Plenty to keep an adventuring family busy for a long weekend.
Ride the Line Review: Timothy Lake South β East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania βββββ (4/5) Big Rig Friendly? Mostlyβbut arrive with caution.
Timothy Lake North is a Thousand Trails campground in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania, neighboring Timothy Lake South. The campground offers lake access, a pool, and family-friendly amenities. A great base camp for exploring the Poconos.
If you're looking for a family-friendly campground while exploring southeastern Massachusetts, Thousand Trails Gateway to Cape Cod is a solid choice. We'd give it 4 out of 5 stars. The campground offers large, tree-lined sites that are mostly sandy with plenty of shade. The sites are clean and well-maintained, making for a comfortable stay. One tip: we would not recommend arriving after dark. The roads and trees can make navigating a large RV a bit challenging at night.
Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine Campground is a unique place to stay, especially if you're planning to visit the historic coal mine. Reservations are made through the event website, and the campground is within walking distance of the mine, making it incredibly convenient. The campsites are on the tighter side, and the drive in includes a steep climb with a fairly sharp turn. While it may look intimidating, both our rig and a couple of 45-foot Brinkley fifth wheels made it without any issues. Just take it slow and you'll be fine.
High Springs Campground is a great choice for anyone looking for a convenient and comfortable stay. The spacious pull-through sites with full hookups make setup easy, even for larger RVs. The campground is close to town, so it's easy to grab groceries, fuel, or a meal while still enjoying a peaceful camping atmosphere. If you're in town for BMX, the nearby track hosts fantastic races and events throughout the year, making this a perfect home base for race weekends.
This is a charming, family-owned campground run by a wonderful couple who truly make you feel welcome. The campground is peaceful and quiet, making it a great place to relax and recharge. The sites are spacious, with reliable water and electric hookups. Keep in mind that the entrance is lined with mature trees, so it can be a tight pull-in, especially for larger rigs. There are quite a few seasonal and permanent sites, but the campground still maintains a calm, friendly atmosphere.
Great Thousand Trails location just minutes from Hersheypark and Chocolate World. Spacious sites, nice pool, and plenty of shade from mature trees. Perfect base camp for exploring Hershey with the family.
A solid Thousand Trails park in Wilmington, Ohio. Well-maintained grounds with good full hookup sites. Great location for exploring the area and hitting some fantastic local BMX tracks.
A really solid Thousand Trails park right outside Mammoth Cave National Park. Shaded sites with gravel pads gave us a great spot to set up camp. The park has mini golf, a pool, and fire rings at each site β the kids loved the evening campfires. Easy access to Mammoth Cave made this a perfect base camp for exploring. Would definitely use our TT membership here again.
Very tight spots but the location and overlook are great. 3.5 stars because we could not put our awning out.
Beautiful tree-covered KOA campground with spacious sites perfect for large rigs. Great amenities including cabins and picnic areas. Close to downtown Hot Springs attractions. Peaceful forest setting with good full hookup availability.
This one holds a special place for us β we've stayed here many times and it never gets old. Right outside West Memphis and just a short drive from the Bass Pro tower, where we had an incredible dinner at the top with sweeping city views. The park itself is wonderfully easy to navigate β pull-in parking unlike anywhere else we've been, totally stress-free setup. Amenities beyond utilities are pretty sparse, so come with everything you need. But honestly? You won't care once you grab a waterfront site and watch the massive barges roll up and down the Mississippi. We always feel safe here and have met some genuinely great people over the years. If a waterfront site is available, snag it immediately β morning coffee with river fog and barge traffic is as good as it gets.
Pack your pantry before you arrive β there is essentially zero dining nearby (the closest thing is a Dollar Store about 15-20 minutes away). But if you come prepared, the amenities deliver! The hookups are great, the putt putt course was a total hit with the kids, and the basketball court is seriously impressive β well-lit and ready for a late-night shootout. Laundry is plentiful too. Fair warning though: the access roads are steep with tight turns into narrow sites, so this one is best suited for seasoned campers who know their rig. We watched a few neighbors have a tough time leveling and unhitching on the slopes β one late-night arrival even had us outside moving picnic tables and flipping on our docking lights to help them in. It's a solid Thousand Trails stop, but privacy and site size definitely leave room for improvement. Experienced campers will appreciate it; newbies may want to work up to this one!
Tight turns and misleading GPS entrance, large and very dark at night, no hosts or leads into the park. Most activities are additional cost and the waterpark is open to the public. Prices are very high and staff is not very knowledgeable about park and amenities. Great potential and beautiful park but lacking in resort level customer service or RV camping etiquette.
Review coming soon!
Family-friendly county park on Evansville's west side. The campground is walking distance to the Burdette Park BMX track β but watch out, the sites are very tight, so plan your rig size accordingly. Onsite amenities include the aquatic center (waterpark), a small miniature golf course, basketball courts, and a dog park.
Onsite camping at the Rock Hill BMX Supercross Track β available for national events only. Sites are paved with electric and water hookups. Camping must be booked ahead through the county, and is only open during national events or by calling the city directly. A premier USA BMX supercross facility that has hosted the Carolina Nationals and the UCI BMX Racing World Championships.
We're planning to visit on an upcoming trip β full review coming soon! This Thousand Trails campground sits in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, close to EHT BMX for a ride day.
